‘America’s Got Talent’ Winner Neal Boyd in Serious Car Crash

America’s Got Talent opera singer Neal E. Boyd is in serious condition after a car accident this weekend (Jan. 22), according to a crash report released by the Missouri State Highway Patrol.

The Season 3 winner — who had his 62-year old mother, Esther, riding along in the car — was involved in a crash Saturday morning in Scott County, after he ran off the right side of the roadway, struck a tree, went airborne and struck another tree.

Boyd, 41, and his mother — who is also listed as being in serious condition — were transported to St. Francis Medical Center in Cape Girardeau, Missouri. Local CBS affiliate KFVS reports that while Esther was reportedly wearing a seat belt, Neal was not.

The former insurance salesman-turned-opera star won the 2008 competition (and the hearts of viewers nationwide) with the story of his impoverished upbringing, and love of singing. “I didn’t realize we were poor until my mama told me I was, but we got through,” he said on the show. “It was my mom who really kept the family together… If it wasn’t for my mom, I wouldn’t have had the confidence to sing for the first time in first grade.”

Boyd released the album My American Dream in 2009, and performed at the 2012 Republican National Convention in Tampa, Florida, singing “God Bless the USA” by Lee Greenwood.
